Project Overview
This emergency project aims to reduce the risk of Ebola transmission in three zones where Comboni Missionaries are working in Democratic Republic of Congo. These are: Butembo, Isiro and Mumbere which are close to Ebola outbreak zones of Lituri (Bunia) and North Kivu provinces. The project focuses on three preventives actions: community sensitisation, preventive hygiene promotion, and distribution of essential protection materials. The activities will be carried out the parishes, schools, community halls, and health centres of the missions.
Butembo:
- Commercial center with high population mobility and large refugee influx from Goma
- Basic hygiene measures already partially in place (mandatory handwashing at churches)
- Identify needs: masks, disinfectants, hygiene stations for community hall,
Isiro : Paroisse Sainte-Anne
- Border location between Lituri (Bunia affected) and North Kivu and extremely high-risk corridor. There are many schools with high risk contamination.
- Identified needs: liquid soap, hygiene kits for parish schools, and sensitisation. teams
Mumbere:
- 135 km from Isiro; hosts a major hospital receiving patients from multiple provinces. The current ongoing insecurity causing massive population displacement and increased physical contact
- Identified needs: masks, disinfectants, and sensitisation
Key Activities
- Community sensitization on Ebola prevention.
- Distribution of hygiene materials (soap, chlorine, masks).
- Installation of handwashing points in churches, schools, and health centers.
- Awareness through radio and community outreach.
